MAD

 

It is interesting to note that the first MAD paperback preceded the magazine. Cartoonist Harvey Kurtzman, the publication's creator and editor, put out the first 23 issues as comic books, beginning in August, 1952, by EC Comics, which was published by William Gaines. They switched to the magazine format in 1955. The MAD Reader was released by Ballantine in 1954.

Kurtzman's brand of humor was outrageous, rude, irreverent, and incredibly popular. The MAD brand name is immediately identifiable by three generations, and the Alfred E. Neuman cover figure is recognizable by avid readers around the world. But Kurtzman's stay was brief. Al Feldstein took over as editor in 1956, and held that post through the early 80's. (Kurtzman eventually took his unique sense of humor to Playboy, where he had free reign with his next successful creation, Little Annie Fanny.)

MAD switched from Ballantine to Signet (New American Library) in 1959 and remained there through the 1960's before it was printed by Paperback Library, Warner Paperback Library and finally Warner.
