The World of Fanzines

A Special Form of Communication

by Fredric Wertham, M.D.

Southern Illinois University Press, Carbondale and Edwardsville, IL. 1973. Hardcover in dust jacket. 144 pages. (7½ X 9½). Yes, this is by the Wertham of comic book fame. I published and edited a fanzine back in the 1960s, and an associate sent a copy to Wertham when he was preparing a book on the fan press. Fanzines are a form of amateur publishing, usually on a very small budget. The subject matter can cover just about any subject, but it normally has content about science fiction, fantasy, horror, films, or any number of subjects. Wertham felt that fanzines were an important form of communication with people of like interests.
