by Wooda N. Carr. Tattered Pages Press, Chicago, IL, 1992. Trade sized paperback, 96 pages. B&W illustrations throughout. This thin volume outlines 40 pulp detective heroes that, though they may not have been as famous as Sam Spade or Phillip Marlowe, are certainly familiar characters to many pulp fans. Carroll John Daly's Satan Hall, John Dickson Carr's Dr. Gideon Fell and Robert Leslie Bellem's Dan Turner are just a few. Others are very obscure, and I'm sure that just about every pulp fan is going to find some character that he's never heard of. The real gem in this book is a series of checklists identifying which magazines these characters appeared in. Most highly recommended.
