While Dashiell Hammett testified before Joseph McCarthy's witch-hunt trials in Congress, other authors of hardboiled fiction incorporated the feelings of mistrust toward politicians, the police, and the rich in general. This is an interesting look at the genre, the characters, and dozens of the most famous hardboiled authors.
