Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials

Workman Publishing, New York. October 1979. Trade paperback. 146 pages. (7 X 10). Preface by Ian Summers. Foreword by The Brothers Hildebrandt. Introduction by Wayne Douglas Barlowe. The author has presented an alphabetical listing of famous alien creatures in science fiction literature. The creatures are beautifully depicted in full color and each has information on book source, physical characteristics, habitat, culture, and reproduction. Barlowe has a section of pencil drawings from his sketchbook showing some creatures he had created. Another edition came out in 1987.

Workman Publishing, New York. June 1987 (Second Edition). Hardcover in dust jacket. 146 pages. (7½ X 10¼). Preface by Ian Summers. Foreword by Robert Silverberg. Introduction by Wayne Barlowe. The only difference I can see is the dropping of the Hildebrandt’s foreword and adding a foreword by Robert Silverberg. It also has Beth Meacham added as one of the compilers. The first edition was published in trade paperback in 1979.
