The Ottenheimer Books

The books shown below are all from the collection of Robert Wiener, a publisher and art historian from New Hampshire.

I&M Ottenheimer Company, of Baltimore, MD, printed about 100 joke books prior to 1940 (they also published a line of scenic postcards). The numbering in the series was rather haphazard. Many of the issue numbers were repeated (including the first three). The majority of the humor (such as it was) came from vaudeville acts, and a large amount of it would be considered "politically incorrect" by just about everybody today. I must warn viewers that many of you will find the titles presented here patently offensive. Still, this is our history, folks.

I struggled with where on my website to put these books. The closest thing to them is Capt Billy's Whiz-Bang, a magazine put out by Fawcett (see the Pulps & Mags section). But these have actual book numbers, rather than magazine issue numbers and dates.

NOTE: There are a few modern Ottenheimer books from the 1970's (contributed by Bob Gaines) in the aphabetical "Other U.S. Publishers" section.
